The Argentine team beats the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw in extra time to repeat their 2014 success and advance towards semifinals.
With the star forwarder Lionel Messi´s superb performance, the Argentine team became among top four of the World Cup Qatar 2022 for the second time in the last three editions and is the only Latin American nation aspiring to the cup following Brazil lost to Croatia (2-4) in penalty shoot-out.
Messi had produced a mesmerizing piece of skill to set up the opening goal for Nahuel Molina in the 35th minute and then converted a penalty in the 73rd to make it 2-0 with his fourth goal of this year’s World Cup.
Despite being down 2-0, the Dutch did not give up. In the 83rd minute, substitute Wout Weghorst dissected the Argentine defense and pierced the goal to keep the Netherlands close 2-1.
Brazil, one of the great pre-competition favorites, also lost to Croatia on penalty shoot-out and said goodbye to the World Cup.
