Cuba praises recognition of rum masters’ knowledge as heritage

Rabat, Nov 30 (Prensa Latina) On Wednesday, Cuba's Ambassador to UNESCO, Yahima Esquivel, and representatives of the Cuban Movement of Masters of Light Rum expressed their gratitude for that UN body inscribing those experts' knowledge in the World's Intangible Cultural Heritage.

It is a special moment, Esquivel stated a few minutes after the Intergovernmental Committee of the Intangible Cultural Heritage endorsed in Rabat the candidacy of an element that is part of Cuba’s identity and reflects the social practice of knowledge transmitted through generations.

The diplomat acknowledged the work of the UNESCO Secretariat, and the Committee consisting of 24 member states of the multilateral institution that is holding its 17th session in Rabat from November 28 to December 3.

Thank you for allowing us to open this issue on a fundamental element for the Cuban culture, the nation, and the carrier community, she stressed.

The ambassador conveyed to the forum in Morocco a message of gratitude from the Cuban people and government and considered that the two days of debates around the candidacy of “The Knowledge of Cuban Light Rum Masters” are a reference in the future work of the Committee.

Juan Carlos González and Cesar Marti, the first rum masters, highlighted the inscription on behalf of their colleagues and took advantage of the moment to recall those who preceded them for perpetuating the value of the liquid flavor of the Cuban people.
