Egypt supports negotiated solution for Libya and calls for elections

Sameh-Shoukry-1
Cairo, Nov 29 (Prensa Latina) Egypt insisted in the needs of holding elections in Libya to put an end to the crisis in the country and also demanded the departure of foreign forces, reported an official statement.

This was expressed by the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, during a meeting held with the Special Representative of the General Secretary of the United Nations in Libya and head of the Organization’s Support Mission in that country, Abdullah Batali.

Shoukry warned that it will be impossible to implement the existing agreements to resolve the Libyan conflict without specific mechanisms and clear deadlines.

UN decisions regarding the withdrawal of all foreign troops, including mercenaries, must be taken within a specific time frame, he stressed.

On his behalf, Batali thanked “the constructive and fundamental role that Egypt plays in Libya.”

In recent months, several rounds of negotiations between representatives of the High Council of State, based in western Libya, and the national Parliament, based in the east, have taken place in Cairo.

Both sides to the conflict maintain deep differences and support rival governments, which threatens to fracture the country.
