Ethiopia reaffirms commitment to protecting and empowering women

Etiopia-mujeres
Addis Ababa, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) The government of Ethiopia stressed that it is working to protect and empower girls, youths, adults and elderly women, linked to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

According to a release from the Government Communication Service, the federal authorities will continue the application of programs and strategies with the aim of avoiding, confronting and punishing any attacks against the civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights of Ethiopian women.

As a party to international conventions aimed at achieving gender equality, Ethiopia has taken an important step in designing and implementing policies that promote women’s rights and empower them.

“Until now, we have achieved sustainable milestones such as gender participation in the enrollment of children in primary education and the verification of women’s property rights through a reform of the civil code”, the statement says.

Ethiopia is one of the few countries in the world to have a female head of state and many ministerial portfolios, as well as the Federal Supreme Court are headed by women.

It also stressed that “the Government is committed to addressing all the sexual and gender violations produced during recent armed confrontations between the federal army and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front”. In this case an Inter ministerial Working Group was created to investigate and bring to justice perpetrators of violations of human rights and humanitarian law in three regional states.

The recently signed peace agreement with the TPLF will also be important in establishing a transitional justice system that addresses the specific needs of women and girls, the government said.
