Myanmar military junta pardons over 6,000 prisoners

Myanmar indulto prisioneros
Naypyidaw, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina) The Myanmar military junta announced the release of over six thousand prisoners due to humanitarian reasons, including foreign citizens, according to the national press.

Australian economist Sean Turnell, adviser to former Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi; former British ambassador Vicky Bowman; Japanese filmmaker Toru Kubota, sentenced to 10 years in prison for his contacts with protesters while making a documentary; and US citizen Kyaw Htay Oo, arrested on terrorism charges, will be deported, according to Myanmar Now media.

Suu Kyi and other top leaders of the ousted ruling party National League for Democracy were not included in the amnesty, the source said.

Myanmar faces an internal crisis which the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) urged in its most recent summits to find a peaceful and lasting solution for.

The bloc issued a statement stressing that the situation in the country remains critical and fragile, with increasing violence affecting ASEAN community-building efforts as well.

The leaders of the group regretted that little progress has been made in the implementation of the five-point Consensus established in April 2021 in Indonesia for a way out of the crisis, which, among other aspects, requires an end to violence, constructive dialogue between all the parties and the appointment of a special ASEAN envoy to mediate in the talks.
