Leaders of rich countries must ensure this commitment, first made in 2009, is finally kept, said CAN, an umbrella organization made up of over 1,900 groups from different parts of the world.
It also praised the significance of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which begins in a few hours in this Egyptian city.
CAN also called for compliance with the agreements to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, which it considered not only necessary but feasible. We need a solid and functional Mitigation Work Program, which enshrines equity and allows discussions on sectoral approaches to speed up decarbonization.
Plus, CAN warned that ‘dependence on oil, gas and coal generates wars, inflation, biodiversity collapse and human rights abuses’.
We must establish a loss and damage financing fund to coordinate information on needs in order to address the situation, the organization said.
