Ecuador: Lasso’s performance questioned in face of violence wave

Quito, Nov 2 (Prensa Latina) Political movements and indigenous organizations in Ecuador today questioned the actions of President Guillermo Lasso in the face of the wave of violence that the country is suffering, mainly in the Guayas and Esmeraldas provinces.

The Union for Hope (UNES) legislative caucus demanded “urgent and forceful” actions to curb insecurity, which goes beyond those two territories in which the Executive declared a state of emergency and encompasses the entire nation.

If the government does not have a real strategy to deal with this problem, which its incompetence caused, President Lasso, assume your responsibility, do no more damage to the country and go home, the UNES legislators demanded in a statement issued this Wednesday.

In the opinion of the assembly members, the states of emergency by themselves do not solve the problem and they ask the ruler to activate the constitutional mechanisms to face the internal commotion that the country is experiencing, in reference to the so-called crossed death.

That is a legal power provided for in the Ecuadorian Constitution by which a president can dissolve Parliament and in turn empowers the legislature to remove the ruler and call elections.

Along the same lines, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) lamented the serious acts of excessive and permanent violence and criticized the “indolence, inability and inaction” of the administration that has led to a “failed state”.

The Christian Social Party also criticized the fact that the president has once again opted for a state of emergency as a “patch” measure to solve a problem that needs comprehensive reforms.

From the ruling party, the National Agreement Bank called for unity at this time, expressed support for the measures adopted and rejected the “political opportunism” of those who criticize Lasso’s management.

Since the early hours of November 1, Ecuador has experienced an escalation of insecurity with at least 18 attacks in Guayas and Esmeraldas on police stations, health centers, gas stations, among other targets.

According to the authorities, these attacks are the response of gangs linked to drug trafficking to a transfer to other prisons of hundreds of inmates from the Penitenciaría del Litoral, located in Guayaquil and the scene of bloody riots in the last two years.

The National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders reported that an inmate died today in that institution as a result of the violent events recorded during the day.

Experts on the matter allege that the rise in delinquency is due, among other factors, to the low public and social investment of the current government, which contributes to the increase in poverty and unemployment.
