Syria demands depoliticization of humanitarian work

Bassam-Sabbagh-300x225
Damascus, Oct 26 (Prensa Latina) The improvement of the humanitarian situation in Syria requires Western countries to stop politicizing humanitarian work or putting obstacles in its way, affirmed the Syrian delegate to the United Nations, Bassam Sabbagh.

“It is necessary to support early recovery projects, lift coercive economic measures, end the illegal foreign presence and stop supporting terrorism and separatist militias and looting national wealth,” the diplomat said during a Security Council session dedicated the situation in Syria.

Sabbagh clarified that all United Nations resolutions related to Syria emphasized the principle of respect for its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. “This should apply to any approach to the political or humanitarian situation,” he stated.

Moreover, the Syrian delegate explained that Syria was one of the most stable and prosperous in the region, and achieved food self-sufficiency, but the war changed this situation and caused a humanitarian crisis that should not be underestimated.

He denounced that the blockade imposed by the United States and Western countries exacerbates the human suffering of the Syrian people, which is why its immediate lifting is very urgent.

The representative of Damascus spoke of the looting of Syrian wheat, cotton and oil carried out by US forces in the northeastern region of Al-Jazirah.

The direct and indirect losses from 2011 to the middle of this year due to the occupation and looting of the United States amounted to 107 billion dollars, the diplomat denounced.
