Brasilia, Oct 24 (Prensa Latina) Former President and candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday participates in the so-called Act in Defense of Democracy in Sao Paulo before the October 30 runoff vote in Brazil.

Organized by the group of progressive lawyers called Prerogatives, the event is part of the election campaign by the Workers’ Party (PT)’s presidential candidate and former Minister Fernando Haddad, who will compete in the polls with the São Paulo government for that political organization.

Other entities, especially the Movement of the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo for Democracy that launched a manifesto, will also be present at the Tuca Theater, a scene of conflicts during the military dictatorship (1964-1985).

In such document, the signatories warned that the times in which we live are dangerous, ‘of corrosion of democracy of the republican instruments. Coalitional presidentialism has transformed into authoritarian presidentialism,’ they point out.

They denounce that Brazil experienced one of the worst administrations of the Covid-19 pandemic on the planet, ‘with nearly 700,000 deaths (three percent of the world population and 11 percent of the pandemic’s deaths).’

Without mentioning far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, they warn that Brazil ‘is also living the worst socio-economic moment of the last years, with alarming levels of job insecurity, discouragement, poverty, food insecurity, and hunger.’

As well as three weeks ago, Lula and Bolsonaro, the winning candidates in the October 2 first round of elections, would focus their campaign commitments on the country’s southeastern region before the runoff vote next Sunday.
