Cuba keeps on leptospirosis surveillance and control

Ciego de Avila, Cuba, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) Health authorities in this central Cuban province are presently keeping surveillance and control of leptospirosis.

The Deputy Director of the Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology in Ciego de Avila José Luis López highlighted the agricultural and livestock workers, veterinarians, workers of Communal Services as well as the population living in flood areas as risk groups.

López specified that over 90% of the people at risk of catching leptospirosis have already received the first vaccine dose, and 70% have been fully vaccinated.

He also added that few cases of leptospirosis-infected cases have been reported in the province, it is critical to take extreme hygienic-sanitary and food safety measures, so it is quite important to wash fruits and vegetables properly.

According to studies, humans catch leptospirosis when contacting with the urine of livestock and rodents, as well as in contaminated soil or vegetation, since rainy season and tropical climate are vulnerable to the spread of the disease.

Specialists highly recommend early medical attention in case of clinical signs including run fever, headache, myalgia, red eyes, among others, since these symptoms are similar to those of dengue and even Covid-19.
