The order to disband the MDMA, which was functioning as part of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), was issued in May.
The MDMA was established in 1998 for two years on the M.C. Jain Commission’s recommendation to probe the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi by a suicide bomber, a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), at a rally in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991.
For some time, the unit sent two dozen Letters Rogatory to several countries, including Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom, seeking information.
Responses were received to most of the letters. However, there were no significant inputs, the source noted.
