Santiago, Chile, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) On the eve of the third anniversary of the social outbreak, Chilean authorities called on the population to commemorate the date peacefully and took measures to guarantee security in case of demonstrations.

Interior Minister Carolina Toha urged those who plan to hold protests on October 18 to be aware against illicit actions and avoid committing crimes.

A movement, driven by students, to fight the rise in the subway fare began in Santiago on October 18, 2019, which subsequently spread nationwide and demonstrated the population’s dissatisfaction with social inequalities and neoliberalism.

The October protests were repressed by Chile’s militarized national police, known as Carabineros, and military forces, resulting in nearly 30 deaths, thousands of wounded, and 460 people with eye injuries due to the firing of pellets or tear gas bombs.

During the social outbreak, shops were looted, institutions were burned down, and subway stations were attacked, among other acts of vandalism.

“This date is undoubtedly important for the Chileans, and the Government’s task is to guarantee peace and security for the people, but also the economic activity,” Interior Deputy Secretary Manuel Monsalve said.
