Tropical storm Julia affected 103,000 people in Hondurans

Tegucigalpa, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) More than 103,000 people have been affected by the rains associated with tropical storm Julia in Honduras, authorities confirmed.

The head of operations of the National Risk and Contingency Management Secretariat, Edwin Aguilera, explained that four people were killed in the country as a result of the intense rainfall linked to the storm.

According to the official, two people died in La Mosquitia, Gracias a Dios department, on the border with Nicaragua, a woman in Cortés (northwest) and a man in El Paraíso (south).

According to the information, the Honduran government maintains 128 active shelters in various parts of the country, mainly in the north, one of the regions mostly hit by the rains.

Official figures show that, some 103,960 people were affected by the floods and landslides. The heavy downpours damaged 34 road sections and seven bridges, among other damages.

The Ministry of Finance announced the transfer of more than 740 million lempiras (about 29,935,000 dollars) to 153 of the 298 municipalities of the country, to deal with the emergency.

Honduras is yet to recover from a storm that caused floods, landslides and landslides back in September, prompting the government of President Xiomara Castro to declare a state of national emergency.
