The new unit, called GM Energy, aims to build on the battery and software expertise that GM has amassed in recent years to develop a new line of electric vehicles that will, in time, replace its internal-combustion offerings.

Industry experts noted this new GM unit puts it in even greater competition with Tesla, which already has similar services with electricity storage systems for homes, as well as solar panels.

GM also praised this initiative will also ease the vehicle-home and vehicle-grid energy supply, making it possible to sell the energy stored in EVs and batteries to companies in this sector.

The GM also stressed its willingness to extend Energy’s activities to Canada and other countries in the future.

GM’s Vice-President for EV Growth Operations Travis Hester emphasized the company will contribute to generating sustainable energy products and services.
