Haitian trade union organizations call for continued mobilization

Port-au-Prince, Oct 4 (Prensa Latina) The National Coordination of Haitian Workers called for the continuation of the anti-government demonstrations that have been shaking the country for a month already, and worsened after the increase in fuel prices.

The general coordinator, Dominique St. Eloi, asked the population not to fall into “deviations”, in reference to the recent outbreak of cholera in the capital, which has already caused the death of at least eight people, including a minor.

The authorities asked the organizers of the mobilizations to allow medical attention and the passage of emergency vehicles.

The demand for better living conditions, a reduction in the prices of the basic food basket and the fight against insecurity quickly turned into a demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

The protesters hold the head of government responsible for the deterioration of the national situation, marked by the expansion of the gangs’ areas of action, inflation in excess of 30 percent and the persistent fuel shortage.

Along the same lines, the Alliance of Haitian Universities described Henry’s management as a failure due to his inability to alleviate the misery of the Haitian people, according to a statement from the coordinators.

The entity called on the representatives of the political and peasant sectors, teachers’ associations, lawyers and others, to reach an agreement that would allow the establishment of a provisional government outside the “dictates” of the international community.

Economic activities and even the restart of the academic year have been paralyzed by the protests, which have gained strength since mid-September, as well as the chronic fuel shortages caused by the action of armed gangs.
