U.S.: Tight race for control of Congress ahead of midterm elections

Washington, Sep 26 (Prensa Latina) Six weeks before the November midterm elections in the United States, Republicans and Democrats continue their harsh fight for controlling Congress, although polls show a slight advantage for the Red Party.

A joint poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News revealed that Republican candidates have considerable superiority on issues including economy, inflation and crime, and Democrats are favorites on climate change and abortion rights.

At a time as analysts have warned that control of Congress is likely to go to GOPers in coming November midterm elections in a deeply polarized country. Two in three registered voters considered this midterm election much more important than previous midterm campaigns. Of these, 47% said they would vote for the Republican candidate in coming November, while 46% said they would vote for the Democrat candidate.

Compared to a survey conducted in April, the results were quite similar, but compared to February´s results, Republicans lost a six-percentage point lead.

Independents, meanwhile, favor conservatives, 47% to 42%, in the congressional vote.

For the second month in a row, GOPers are losing seats, as estimates put them with 223 seats, down from 226 in August and 230 in July.

Two-thirds of voters feel their rights and freedoms are at stake in this midterm election, and attribute greater significance to it than to their financial well-being.

On November 8, as midterm elections are held, Americans will renew the lower house of Congress and one-third of the Senate.
