Argentine Senate approves Supreme Court reform bill

Argentina-ministro-Justicia-300x200
Buenos Aires, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) Argentine Minister of Justice and Human Rights Martin Soria on Friday highlighted the approval by the Senate of a bill to increase Supreme Court members from five to 15.

During a special public session of about eight hours, the Upper House of the National Congress endorsed the implementation of a reform proposed by the “Frente de Todos” (Front of All-FdT), which obtained 36 votes for and 33 against, with a majority of legislators from the “Juntos por el Cambio” (Together for Change) alliance.

The regulation also establishes respect for gender equality, the representation of different areas of Law, and the country’s conception as federal.

The Senate exercised its legitimate function of legislating on the new conformation of the Court, Soria wrote on his Twitter profile and criticized the manipulation of the act by media outlets such as Clarín and La Nación newspapers.

For his part, FdT president in that legislative body José Mayans highlighted the importance of expanding that institute and denounced that during the government of former President Mauricio Macri, the Judiciary pursued trade unionists, politicians, and entrepreneurs.

The initiative will now be analyzed in the Chamber of Deputies.
