Joe Biden reaffirms UK as closest ally

Washington, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) President Joe Biden on Wednesday reaffirmed the UK as his country's closest ally, in a meeting with the British Prime Minister Liz Truss.

According to the White House, the U.S. president underlined the two-way collaboration in important issues such as energy sector and support to Ukraine, despite allegations this stance ramps up tensions with Russia following the military operation launched on February 24.

Likewise, Biden emphasized his commitment to protect the achievements of the so-called 1998 Northern Ireland Good Friday Agreement referendum in order to put an end to nearly three decades of violence between Protestant and Catholic Republican Unionist communities.

Truss, on the other hand, laid the stress on her willingness to work closely with the United States, especially on energy and economic security.

Both sides also reaffirmed their deepest condolences on the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II on September 8.

President Biden conveyed last week his willingness to go on a close relationship with UK, in a conversation with King Charles III, who was crowned following the death of the monarch.

Although Washington and London recognize a “special relationship”, the UK Prime Minister admitted on Tuesday that the bilateral post-Brexit free trade agreement could take years to get off the ground, because negotiations have not even started off.

The treaty with the United States was one of the promises of the then Prime Minister Boris Johnson (2019-2022) as he withdrew the UK out of the European Union (EU) in 2020, but after arriving at the White House Joe Biden implied this pact is not a priority for his administration.

According to press reports, the U.S. president is deeply concerned that London’s threats to bypass the post-BREXIT trade protocol between UK and the EU in Northern Ireland could jeopardize the Good Friday Agreement referendum.
