“I want to call attention to the use of unilateral coercion measures. In accordance with the UN Charter, the only legitimate sanctions are those imposed by the UN Security Council (UNSC) to enforce its decisions on peace and security,” said Fernandez.
By virtue of this, he added, Argentina joins the call of the Cuban and Venezuelan peoples for the lifting of the US blockades these two nations are presently facing.
Xiomara Castro, on the other hand, strongly rejected the U.S. blockade, the one she regarded as infamy,while praising the need to seriously deal with multipolarity globally.
“We proclaim the return to respect for the self-determination of peoples, rejecting the infamous and brutal blockade against the Republic of Cuba,” she said.
The Bolivian leader said that another clear example of the application of unilateral measures is the inhuman and criminal commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, which is putting lives of millions of citizens at risk.
According to him, it´s a crime against humanity to implement such measures, as it is to keep Cuba on the list of nations sponsor terrorism.
“It is a regrettable example that should make us reflect on how the majority of decisions made every year at the UN are not complied with by certain countries,” he added in reference to the draft resolution passed more than 25 years ago on the need to eliminate such a punitive policy.
Arce considered it inconceivable that unilateral coercive measures are still being applied in a world hit by crisis and pandemics, all with the major purpose of breaking governments.
