President Joe Biden calls for end to ‘dark money’ in US elections

EEUU, Biden
Washington, Sep 20 (Prensa Latina) President Joe Biden on Tuesday called on Congress to pass a law to fight off dark money in US elections, calling untraceable spending in politics a serious problem for democracy.

Joe Biden said the dark money in addition to eroding public trust is a real problem to both Republicans and Democrats.

“There’s much too much money that flows in the shadows to influence our elections,” Biden said at the White House, noting that advocacy groups can run advertisements supporting or attacking a candidate “right up until election day” without disclosing who paid for it.

The US president alluded to an ammount of $1.6 billion from a single donor to a group led by the co-chairman of the conservative Federalist Society, who in turn advised former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) on his Supreme Court picks.

Such an individual contribution has been the largest given to a nonprofit ever made public, CNN revealed.

Biden’s remarks came just a day after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that a procedural vote on the so-called Disclose Act would be held on Wednesday, with strong opposition from Republicans.

Schumer revealed the legislation “would require Super PACs (Political Action Committees) and other donor groups to report anyone who contributes $10,000 or more during an election.

It would also require associations that spend money on judicial candidates to disclose donors.
