The Ministry reported on Twitter that a 24-year-old patient suspected of having the disease presented symptoms for several days before dying.

The confirmation served to alert the rest of countries in East Africa, although the permanent secretary of the Ugandan Ministry of Health, Diana Atwini, assured at a press conference that the country is prepared to tackle the outbreak.

Atwini stressed that “every district has a rapid response” for an emergency situation related to Ebola, and urged clinics in the area to receive patients with symptoms and contact the district authorities “in order to apply investigation and isolation measures.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) Office in Africa issued a statement, according to which, after investigating six suspicious deaths during September, health authorities concluded that the outbreak was caused by a relatively rare Sudanese strain.

According to the statement, there are currently eight suspected cases receiving care in a health center, while the WHO is helping Ugandan specialists with the investigation and has sent experts to the affected area.

The Ebola strain from Sudan is one of the best known along with those from Zaire and Bundibugyo.
