According to publishing industry specialists, only 6% of Latinos identify themselves as such within the sector and their performance varies in executive roles, sales, literary agents or novelists.
Other indigenous or African-American descent minorities account for minimal figures. White writers are prominent and there is a growing trend of censorship attempts related to books for children and young adults, according to the American Library Association (ALA).
The ALA confirmed that works containing sexual identity, ethnicity and gender issues have received an unprecedented number of threats to publishers from conservatives and activists.
According to James La Rue, former ALA official, this is a coordinated and vigorous campaign in line with the 700 actions applied in 2021 and, in response, the national entity launched the initiative ¨Books Unite Us, Censorship Divides Us¨ geared to guaranteeing freedom of speech and fostering literature with no repression.
