Cameras to be installed in schools in Uruguay for added security

Montevideo, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan educational authorities approved the increase in security measures in educational establishments, given reports of an increase in theft and vandalism.

The National Administration of Public Education (ANEP) approved a security plan that provides for the installation of cameras at the entrance to educational centers, with priority given to those with the greatest risks.

The cameras will be installed as a dissuasive and preventive measure, although they should also improve the police response to crimes.

To implement this and other proposals, the ANEP requested an additional 22 million dollars from the Ministry of Economy, which exceeds the 17 million annually assigned to security issues.

According to ANEP records, so far this year there have been 317 robberies and vandalism in educational centers, as per the El Observador newspaper.

In the second quarter of 2022, there were 90 thefts outside the schools, when in the first quarter there were 60. There were 75 robberies within the premises and 47 acts of vandalism in the same period.
