According to the Global Times newspaper, many centers in the Shaanxi, Liaoning, Jilin, Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan provinces made the decision and plan to turn to online classes when classes begin on August 22nd.
The country even postponed military training for college freshmen.
China is experiencing a strong resurgence of Covid-19 in highly demanded tourist destinations such as Tibet, Xinjiang and Hainan, the latter being the most affected territory with around 10,000 cases reported this month. Also, the north of the country is suffering from floods and the center-south from intense droughts as a result of the lack of rain and record temperatures reported since the beginning of July.
Temperature rose to 45 degrees Celsius in the municipality of Chongqing, one of the regions most affected by the lack of rain and the drop to alarming levels of the waters in the Yangtze.
The drought is the worst in decades, affecting millions of people and threatening China’s autumn crops and livestock yields, electricity service and tourism.
