El Salvador progresses with anti-gang policy despite questionings

San Salvador, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) The Government of President Najib Bukele on Wednesday makes progress with its anti-gang policy despite questioning from international organizations that accuse Salvadoran authorities of alleged human rights violations.

Since the implementation of the security plan and the state of emergency began in March, after recording a weekend with 87 victims due to gang actions, 49,000 alleged members of those groups have been imprisoned, Mauricio Arriaza Chicas, director of the National Civil Police (PNC), stated.

The offensive was intensified in the last week, coinciding with the August festivities in honor of the Patron Saint of El Salvador, when authorities dismantled 10 gang camps, detained members and seized more than 60 weapons, according to Arriaza.

One element that stands out so far is the lack of information that reaches the families of the alleged gang members, and innocent people are possibly among those who fell in the raids.

Despite this situation, a large majority of the population supports the Government’s actions after its actions increased security levels and eliminated extortion practices in businesses, among others.

The Legislative Assembly approved the suspension of constitutional guarantees to give special powers to the Executive, something that allowed progress in this anti-crime policy and the implementation of the state of emergency, criticized by humanitarian organizations that are sometimes supported by governments that do not look at their problems and accuse others.
