Importance of Emancipation Day highlighted in Barbados

ministra-Mia-Mottley
Bridgetown, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, today highlighted the importance of Emancipation Day and the need to continue with reparation to peoples who have not yet overcome the consequences of slavery.

“Today, we recognize the importance of Emancipation Day and also amplify the continued call for reparation. Many countries face a development deficiency based on historical wrongdoing that is not their fault. Restorative Justice is a must,” Mottley wrote in Twitter.

Barbados, the youngest republic on the planet, was part of the British Overseas Empire in 1833 when London decreed the abolition of slavery in its dominions.

The measure became effective in the colonies of the Antilles in the following years, and although all the countries of the region did not specify it at the same time, they all celebrate the date in the month of August, although not on the same day.
