Israel on alert after arrest of Palestinian leader

ejercito-de-Israel
Tel Aviv, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) The Israeli security forces are alert after arresting the head of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, Bassam al-Saadi, in the West Bank, prompting demonstrations and warnings from the militias.

Al-Saadi was arrested last night in the Jenin refugee camp, north of the West Bank, during a raid that sparked clashes and killed an 18-year-old Palestinian.

The Palestinian and Israeli media reported that situation is particularly tense around the Gaza Strip, where the group has a large presence.

The Palestinian news agency Safa announced that the Israeli authorities suddenly closed the Kerem Shalom crossing and the Beit Hanoun/Erez checkpoint, in the north and south of the West Bank, respectively, as part of the measures.

The army also paralyzed traffic on roads and highways near the borders with the territory, and rail traffic between the cities of Ashkelon and Sderot. It also prohibited beach-goers from visiting the Zkim beach.

Following al-Saadi’s arrest, the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad, announced the mobilization of their forces.

Various organizations such as the Islamic Resistance Movement and the Democratic and Popular Fronts for the Liberation of Palestine warned Israel of the consequences of the arrest and called to continue the fight against the occupation.
