Cairo, Jul 21 (Prensa Latina) Egypt began construction of its first nuclear power plant aiming at generating electricity with Russian technology, the government announced.

The Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, and the General Director of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom), Alexei Likhachev, attended the ceremony of the start of construction work.

The work is focused on the construction of the first of the four reactors of the facility, located in the northwestern governorate of Marsa Matrouh, some 300 kilometers from Cairo.

Shaker assured that the El Dabaa plant will comply with the security measures of the International Atomic Energy Agency. It can withstand earthquakes and plane crashes, adding that the lifespan of the reactors can reach up to 60 years.

This project gives Egypt the opportunity to reach a new industrial and technological level. It has been a dream of Egyptians to obtain nuclear energy for more than half a century, and Rosatom is honored to fulfill it, Likhachev said.

Amgad El-Wakil, chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, told Al-Ahram newspaper that the project could generate net revenues of $264 billion over six decades.
