Long-term pollution exposure increases risk of Covid-19 infection

Geneva, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) Long-term pollution exposure, such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide, increases risks of more severe Covid-19 symptoms and infections as well as a higher possibility of death.

According to a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is also emerging evidence that Covid-19 transmission may be favored in winter conditions in temperate regions, due to less ventilated indoor crowded areas.

The WMO did not, however, rule out a reduction in risks during hot seasons, as other factors may dominate the seasonal influence on overall risk profiles.

As reported by WMO, the Covid-19 pandemic brought about a great number of challenges combined with meteorological phenomena, creating important problems that challenged local authorities to adhere to disease prevention protocols, while managing extreme weather events. The WMO Covid-19 research working team was established to provide guidance to the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services regarding provision of services to deal with the health contingency. pll/rgh/ifs
