The research carried out by the Center for Social Policies of the institution of reference in teaching and research in Brazil and the world specifies that the total number of citizens in this situation grew 42.11 percent in just one year.
The figure reached the mark of 23 million people, which is roughly 10.8 percent of the estimated population in Brazil, that is, more than 213 million inhabitants.
It is worthy to specify that those who live with less than 210 reais (40 dollars) per month are considered below this profile, which the authors of the thesis consider insufficient to satisfy basic needs.
The study also shows that the poorest population suffers from the lack of a permanent and well-structured policy to combat misery.
When the National Congress approved the emergency aid of 600 reais (120 dollars), against the will of the Jair Bolsonaro administration, which defended a value of 200 reais, the number of people under the line of hardship was reduced to only 3,9 percent in September 2020.
However, the Government reduced the assistance by half and suspended the payment at the beginning of last year. As a result, the rate of people below the poverty line reached 13.2 percent in March 2021.
