According to the source, Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh made the demand last night during a meeting with the United States Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Barbara Leaf, and her deputy Hady Amr.
Shtayyeh stressed the importance of the US administration’s intervention in stopping any and all of Israel’s unilateral measures, including its attempts to Judaize the city of Jerusalem.
During the exchange, the head of government denounced the escalation in the actions of the Israeli police and reiterated that a two-state solution is the only way to end the conflict.
Contacts between Palestinian and US officials have multiplied in recent weeks as part of preparations for President Joe Biden’s upcoming visit.
As part of these exchanges, Leaf also spoke separately with President Mahmoud Abbas and the Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hussein Al-Sheikh.
During the meeting with Abbas, Al-Sheikh warned that the situation in the occupied territories is unsustainable due to the increase in Israeli attacks.
Last week the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants criticized the US opposition to the first report of a UN committee on the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and accused Washington of maintaining a biased position in favor of Israel.
