Cuba attends Stockholm+50 International Conference

Havana, Jun 2 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Minister of Science, Technology and Environment Elba Rosa Perez heads a delegation that is participating at the Stockholm+50 International Conference in the Swedish capital this Thursday and Friday.

In a panel held prior to the event, the minister convened to modify the unsustainable production and consumption patterns that prevail in today’s world.

Perez urged to design new policies, make a greater use of science and innovation and have an availability of means of implementation, especially financing and capacity building.

Odalys Goicochea, general director of Environment at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), told Prensa Latina that the meeting will be an opportunity to disseminate the Cuban Strategy for the transition to a circular economy, whose principles are based on the non-pollution and the optimal use of natural resources and raw materials.

In addition to disseminating the work done by the Caribbean nation on the environmental issues, the results of the national consultations, a process that took place prior to the event, will be presented, and for which scientists, academics, officials and members of civil society were convened, Goicochea added.

From the debate, she said, many proposals were generated, as people identified the problems, but also proposed solutions on issues that have an impact on the quality of life of the communities.

Cuba’s selection to participate in the meeting, along with 58 other countries globally, is a recognition to the public policies drawn up in the island and its daily work in defense of the sustainable and inclusive progress.

The Stockholm+50 International Conference: “A Healthy Planet for the Prosperity of All – Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity,” is organized by the Government of Sweden, supported by Kenya, and aims to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

This time, it will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the call and holding of the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment and the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Environment Program.
