Cuba eliminates mandatory wear of facemasks for social activities

Havana, May 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuba eliminates as of this Tuesday the mandatory wear of facemasks for all social activities, except in medical consultations and hospital services that require it, Public Health Minister Jose Angel Portal stated.

It is also maintained in restricted areas where there may be an outbreak control and its use is necessary, as well as in those who present respiratory symptoms, the minister said on the Mesa Redonda (Round Table) radio and TV program.

He insisted on the importance that the vulnerable people continue wearing it, not only against Covid-19, but also it is known to be useful against other diseases, he emphasized.

The health ministry recommends, as other countries have done, the wear of facemasks in crowded places, urban buses, in queues where there are several people or in places where it is not possible to keep a physical distance, he stated.

In workplaces and student centers, he ratified the decision of not allowing the entry of citizens with respiratory symptoms in any of the variants of the cause of the disease.

None of the measures is immovable, Portal remarked, and added that its permanence in time will depend on the epidemiological situation in the country and on what we are capable from the responsibility.

Cuba has had nine consecutive weeks with a decrease in the number of cases, a reduction at a faster pace in the last two weeks and 19 consecutive days without deaths, only two in May, Deputy Public Health Minister Dr. Carilda Peña previously said.
