According to local reports, the 84-year-old politician and leader of the Amal Movement will lead the Parliament for the 2022-2026 period, in his seventh uninterrupted term since 1992.
The ballot count showed 65 votes in favor of Berri’s appointment, compared to 40 against and 23 blank, the National News Agency reported.
After confirming his victory, Berri was quoted by Lebanon Debate as saying that any word, plan, promise and program that does not touch people’s lives will be out of context.
“I extend my hand to everyone for their sincere cooperation to save the country. We must unite to reject any compromise of rights or normalization with the enemy,” Berri said, as per the Al-Mayadeen news channel.
Analysts of the situation in Lebanon and the Middle East affirm that Berri is considered a political support within the state for establishing a balance for the Shiite community in terms of representation.
