Through his official Twitter account, the highest representative of the United Nations expressed that unregulated migration is a cruel kingdom of human traffickers and has a terrible cost.
Recently, the UN headquarters in New York hosted the International Migration Review Forum in order to promote and review the policies adopted by the different countries in this area.
At that meeting, held on May 19, Guterres called for concrete action to end the business of human trafficking.
As the minister recalled on that occasion, in December 2018 the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was approved in Morocco, which represents the determination of the international community to put these values into practice in a spirit of solidarity and partnership. .
The Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated “how far we still are from achieving international migration governance for all,” said the Portuguese diplomat.
Many migrants worked on the front lines of the crisis, risking their health to save others, and their remittances were a lifeline for many families, he noted.
But too often, migrant workers and their families are excluded from sharing in the prosperity they themselves help generate, the UN secretary-general warned.
Migrants were often excluded from recovery measures and access to basic services, be it health care or social protection, he recalled.
For this reason, he stressed, it is urgent to continue implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration with the support of the member countries of the UN.
