Panama and Cuba strengthen collaboration in agricultural sciences

Panama City, May 12 (Prensa Latina) University authorities from Panama and Cuba today signed a collaboration agreement that promotes academic exchange and joint research in the field of agricultural sciences.

At the University of Panama (UP), its rector Eduardo Flores headed, together with Mabelín Armenteros, vice-rector of the Agrarian University of Havana (UNAH), the signing of an agreement that will allow specialists from the isthmus to study for a doctorate on the island.

According to the agreement, Caribbean professionals will also be part of the editorial board of the UP Agricultural Research Journal, among other cooperation possibilities.

At the evening, which was attended by the Cuban ambassador to the canal nation, Lydia Margarita González, the dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in this capital, Dr. Eldis Barnes, signified the scope of the pact, based on new links with universities of prestige such as the UNAH, from which three Panamanians graduated, now collaborators in the UP.

For her part, Armenteros highlighted the opportunity of this interrelation in priority areas for both countries and the region, such as food security and food production; and she highlighted the necessary growing link between universities and communities.

“This is just one of the projects, but others will come that will allow us to radiate towards our countries in an effort to contribute from the knowledge sector to their sustainable economic development,” she remarked.

In his turn, the rector of the UP highlighted the importance for Panama of training new Doctors in Science, because behind each professional in that teaching category, he said, there is research and also the solution to a problem in society, which It is up to us to face ourselves.
