The tremor was registered at a depth of 10 kilometers, had its epicenter three kilometers north-northwest of Baradères, near the same area affected last August by a powerful telluric movement that left more than 2,200 dead and almost 13,000 injured.
Last week another earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was reported in the department of Nippes, in southwest Haiti, about 36 kilometers from Les Cayes, the most important city in the southern part of the country. The event was also strongly felt in Baradères.
The Caribbean country has frequent seismic activity as it is located on geological faults, which makes it prone to phenomena of this type.
The Office of Mines and Energy revealed that from August 14 to February 28, 1,722 earthquakes were recorded, of which 884 in the department of Nippes, 548 in Grand Anse and 290 in Sur.
For its part, in 2021, 1,647 tremors were registered, an increase of 230 percent compared to 2020, the agency indicated.
