Havana, May 8 (Prensa Latina) The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, today thanked Cuba's highest decoration, the José Martí order, and expressed his deep affection for the people of the island.

The distinction was imposed by President Miguel Díaz-Canel at the Palace of the Revolution as part of López Obrador’s official visit to the Antillean nation starting this Saturday.

“I am honored to receive this recognition that bears the name of the most humane and sincere independence fighter in our America,” said the head of state, assuring that José Martí belongs to Mexico and Cuba, “he is a universal leader.”

Prior to the delivery of the decoration, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Josefina Vidal highlighted the remarkable efforts of López Obrador to revitalize the Latin American and Caribbean states and strengthen the unity of the region.

In addition, he recognized his firm defense of just causes, peace and cooperation, as well as for achieving a better world for the Mexican people, which has earned him deep respect beyond the borders of his country.

Vidal said the Cuban people deeply appreciate AMLO’s fight -as he is popularly known- for the elimination of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States, intensified in the midst of a pandemic.

“The gratitude for the supportive and generous support received at the time of Covid-19 is immense,” she stressed.

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs assured that the delivery of the José Martí order is the most concrete expression of Cuba’s affection and the will to continue strengthening the historical ties between Mexico and the Caribbean island.

López Obrador paid tribute this morning to the National Hero of Cuba in a memorial that bears his name and held talks with President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
