Mass rally in Mexico City in support of electricity reform

Marcha-Mexico-300x224
Mexico City, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) A mass popular rally was held in Mexico City on Thursday in support of the electricity reform promoted by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Just three days before the consultation to revoking the president’s mandate, Claudia Sheinbaum, head of Mexico City’s Government, along with officials and members of the MORENA (National Regeneration Movement) party, held a rally on Wednesday attended by nearly 80,000 people who support the debated electricity reform proposed by President Lopez Obrador.

The rally, which filled the main streets of city’s downtown and took place at the Monument to the Revolution, ended late on Wednesday night as one of the biggest demonstrations in support of the most debated and complex constitutional reform presented by the president in his nearly three years in office.

Thousands of people gathered in different places after midday, despite the tremendous heat, until they began to walk to the capital’s downtown. The head of Mexico City Government, who called for the mobilization, explained that she was participating as an ordinary citizen but also as an official.

In her speech, Sheinbaum called on federal legislators to defend national sovereignty and the people’s interests, and to vote in favor of the reform to strengthen the Federal Electricity Commission, which foreign companies are trying to annihilate.

Regarding the revoke of the president’s mandate, whose popular consultation will take place on April 10, she said that President Lopez Obrador is not alone, and we tell him from here that he will not be defeated by slander because the people accompany him.
