On Wednesday’s ordinary session, the legislative body also agreed on the appointment of Saab as peace commissioner designated by the Bolivarian Republic.
Parliament’s Speaker Jorge Rodriguez highlighted the role played by the special envoy of the Venezuelan State, whose functions consisted of facilitating the acquisition of food, medical supplies and other essential goods, in the face of the obstacles created by Washington’s hostile policy.
Rodriguez denounced the illegality of the arrest of Alex Saab during a stopover in Cape Verde in mid-2020 and his subsequent extradition to the United States, describing it as “kidnapping”, and condemned the humiliating treatment Saab was subjected to.
Rodriguez emphasized the inviolability of the condition of a diplomatic agent on the part of the United States Government, in violation of the principles of the Vienna Convention.
On October 16th, after 491 days of illegal detention in Cape Verde, Saab was extradited to the United States, where a court in Miami leveled at him several charges of money laundering and conspiracy, all dismantled by the defense with solid arguments.
