In his communiqué for World Autism Awareness Day, Guterres called for reaffirming the commitment to an inclusive, equitable and sustainable world.

“Many people with autism still live isolated, discriminated against and disconnected from their communities, in institutions or even in their own homes,” Guterres lamented.

“The health crisis has exacerbated many of these inequalities through the loss or reduction of services at school, at home and in the community,” he stressed.

In his words, “(…) we must ensure that the rights, prospects and well-being of people with disabilities, including those with autism, are an integral part of the recovery from the pandemic.”

Guterres also recalled that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development represents a commitment to reduce inequality through the social, economic and political inclusion of all. He also advocated for community support systems for people with autism and more inclusive teaching.
