UN chief concerned about wave of violence in El Salvador

United Nations, Mar 30 (Prensa Latina) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday follows with concern the events occurred in El Salvador, after a rise in violence in that country, which recorded a wave of homicides over the weekend.

In a communique, the UN head expressed his solidarity with the Salvadoran people in this difficult situation.

Guterres also asked that the measures adopted by the authorities in response to the growing violence is in line with the international human rights standards.

According to local media, authorities in El Salvador have already arrested more than 500 members of criminal structures, as part of the operations to respond to a recent wave of homicides.

National Civil Police director Mauricio Arriaza Chicas stated that 576 people were arrested during joint actions with the Armed Forces in all of the country’s departments.

According to official data, 14 and 62 homicides were recorded in that nation on Friday and Saturday, respectively, figures that contrast with the tiny daily averages achieved since President Nayib Bukele took office in June 2019.
