First woman to chair the Constitution Commission in Chile

Santiago de Chile, March 17 (Prensa Latina) Deputy Karol Cariola, from the Communist Party, is the first woman to chair the Constitution, Legislation, Justice and Regulation Commission of the Chilean Chamber of Deputies.

The young woman, 34 years old, was elected to the position by eight votes in favor and five against, and she surpassed the deputy of the Independent Democratic Union Gustavo Benavente.

“I appreciate the honor that my colleagues grant me to be the first woman in the history of our country to chair the constitution commission of the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies,” the legislator wrote on her Twitter account.

Cariola was a leader of the Federation of Students of the University of Concepción and general secretary of the Communist Youth, and in 2014 she became a deputy.

In the past November 2021 elections, she stood out for being the re-elected parliamentarian with the most votes in the country, where she ran for district nine, which includes the communes of Recoleta, Independencia, Conchalí, Renca, Huechuraba, Cerro Navia, Quinta Normal and Lo Prado, in the metropolitan area of Santiago.

The new cabinet headed by President Gabriel Boric, who took office on March 11, is made up mostly of women, who head 14 of the 24 ministries, including Defense, Interior and Foreign Relations.
