According to government counselor, Carlos Jijón, the ordinance to be signed by President Guillermo Lasso includes some modifications to the current resolution on the subject.
Among the changes is that the children will receive the aid from the moment the investigative process for femicide begins and not after the executed sentence to the murderer, as is currently the case.
Up to now, a little more than 611 thousand dollars in bonuses have been paid to the children of the victims and with the reform, this could increase to around 664 thousand dollars this year.
Official data reveal that out of 684 femicide orphans, only 121 receive economic assistance.
The payment is between 20 and 54 percent of the unified basic salary, depending on the number of children left by the murdered mother.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, from 2014 to October 2021, 506 femicides were registered in Ecuador, a figure that in the opinion of foundations and organizations in defense of women, are higher.
This year’s statistics indicate that until last February 27, the number of femicides reported amounted to 44.
