Ukrainian nuclear power plant works despite nationalist incident

Moscow, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, in Ukraine, controlled by Russian forces, continues working normally, despite of Thursday's fire, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Friday.

The Defense Ministry’s spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said that on early Friday, Ukrainian nationalist units tried to set fire to that nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, near the city of Enerhodar.

He recalled that not only the plant, but also the territory near it and the city, have been under control of Russian troops since February 28.

The Plant’s spokesman, Andrei Tuz, said on Thursday evening that the fire did not pose a threat to the population.

Later, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine clarified that the fire was extinguished at 06:20 hours, local time, and no casualties were reported as a result of the incident.

Konashenkov noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statements and his talks with the United States and the United Kingdom on the alleged threat posed by what happened at the Zaporozhie nuclear power plant are an attempt at accusing Russia of creating a source of radioactive contamination.
