Minsk, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) Igor Karpenko, president of Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus, said on Monday that 82.86 percent of people who took part in a referendum voted for the adoption of the amendments to the Constitution.

The official added that 4,440,813 citizens supported the amendments, while 686,165 (12.6 percent) voted against.

Karpenko previously reported that more than 6.8 million citizens (78.63 percent) had taken part in the voting, for which the country opened 5,510 polling stations, while 42.93 percent of Belarusians voted early.

The CEC plans to hold a session on March 3 to announce the final results of the referendum, he annonced.

The preliminary draft of the amended Constitution was drawn up by the Constitutional Commission that began its work in March 2021 and, among several items, the amendments provide for a limit to two consecutive five-year terms in office for the Belarusian president.
