China to sanction two US firms for selling weapons to Taiwan

China - US
Beijing, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) China announced sanctions against US companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies for their involvement in the sale of arms to Taiwan, reaffirming its opposition to said sales and demanding that Washington cease and desist.

Wang Wenbin, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that this is a necessary measure to protect China’s interests, given the White House’s insistence on maintaining discord on one of the most sensitive issues in the relations between China and the United Sates.

“We urge the United States to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués, stop arms sales to Taiwan and sever its military ties,” he said.

He also stressed that this position undermines Washington’s ties with Beijing and endangers peace and stability in the region.

China thus responded to the recent approval of the sale of arms to Taipei for 100 million dollars for the modernization of Patriot anti-missile systems.

This part of a program announced in 2019 by the White House to supply war materiel to Taiwan for two billion dollars.

The international community approved with 170 votes a resolution in 1971 that recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of China, however, the leaders of Taiwan refuse to accept that status.
