Havana, Feb 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuba´s Foreign Ministry (MINREX, in Spanish) on Wednesday condemned the US responsibility in irregular migration through Nicaragua and other Central American nations.

According to the Director-General of MINREX´s Consular Affairs and Cuban Residents Abroad Ernesto Soberón in a press conference, the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington influences migratory situation.

Similarly, indefinite closure of consular services in Havana and obligation to go to third countries to apply for a visa trigger unconventional departures, Mr. Soberón remarked.

The Cuban official said migratory flows towards Nicaragua are not an isolated case for Cuba, since other territories also exempt visa requirement for Cuban travelers.

In some cases, such a decision responds to agreements reached with a concept of reciprocity and for others it is a decision of the recipient government, he added.

Mr. Soberón stressed Cuba seeks to guarantee regulated, orderly and safe traveler movements, for which bilateral cooperation mechanisms must be set up.

Similarly, strategies are urgently needed to fight illegal migration such as human trafficking and irregular trafficking, he pointed out.

Cuban Government keeps systematic contact on migratory and consular issues with Nicaragua, as well as with other Latin American and Caribbean nations.

Regarding measures taken in favor of Cubans who were stranded in other countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr. Soberón explained these ones will not be changed till further notice.
