Joe Biden said in a statement before the planned protest that the movement to end gun violence is “extraordinary.”
We need rules requiring criminal background checks when purchasing a gun, banning the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and also eliminating immunity for gun makers, US president stated.
The US president also said he has asked Congress to pass a budget allocating additional $5 billion for strategies to reduce violent incidents.
“We can never bring back those we’ve lost. But we can come together to fulfill the first responsibility of our government and our democracy: to keep each other safe,” he said. “For Parkland, for all those we’ve lost, and for all those left behind, it is time to uphold that solemn obligation.”
The Parkland shooting took place on February 14, 2018, sparking off the “March for Our Lives” movement, a youth-led initiative to end gun violence.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) past December blocked a request to expand background checks, preventing Democrats from moving forward on the issue.
According to Biden, his administration supports those working to end gun violence, and has proposed a plan to reduce crime, to stop the spread of bogus weapons and increase scrutiny of dealers.
