“Thanks to the goodwill of the international community, we feel that the investigation is moving forward. Congratulations,” the widow wrote on Twitter after the arrests of Marco Antonio Palacios and Samir Handal, allegedly involved in the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

Handal, arrested in the neighboring Dominican Republic and accused of financing the assassination, was deported last Wednesday to the United States to answer charges for the crime.

In an interview with the US newspaper The New York Times, the businessman suggested “close links” between the current Prime Minister Ariel Henry and the lawyer Joseph Felix Badio, alleged planner of the assassination.

For his part, Palacios, the first to be formally charged, told US authorities that the armed commando made up of Colombians knew of the plan to kill the president, although the original intention was to arrest him.

After six months of stalemate, the investigation advanced in the last weeks with the help of the United States, while in Haiti, the examining magistrate Gary Orélien released four policemen allegedly implicated.

Last Tuesday, the Colombian government denounced threats to its honorary consul in Port-au-Prince, Julio Santa, while demanding that justice should work.
